Sunday Funday Links: Lodge Cooking

For the past few years, our troops has gone camping twice a year - in the fall and the spring. When we first added the fall camping trip, we went with an indoor lodge, partly because of our hesitation about the weather and partly because it would allow us to focus on some badgework. (Our spring camping trip usually focuses on outdoor activities - canoeing, hiking, archery, campfire cooking, etc.)

The girls loved the change of pace and the opportunity to all stay together in one room. We also found it opened up the opportunity to try out some different meal ideas. Since our camp's lodges are all equipped with a refrigerator, stove and oven, it frees us to tackle recipes that we would never attempt over an open fire. Here are a few of the ones we've done and hope to do in the future.

Baked French Toast - There are a million different recipes for this, but I loved this one from Pioneer Woman. Our girls prepped it Friday night after getting to camp, and then all we had to do was throw it in the oven the next morning.

S'more Cobbler - We were looking for a way to bring the taste of s'mores indoors and came across this recipe. Tasted great, but I would recommend lining your pan with foil and spraying with cooking spray to help with cleanup.

French Bread Pizzas - We tried these once outdoors, but due a number of circumstances (poorly done fire pits, weather, timing), they were a horrible disaster and we swore never again. Until we decided to try them again in a lodge - success! And like all the best troop meals, allows the girls to customize to their tastes.

Foil Packs - Yes, these can be done on an outdoor fire but also cook so much quicker indoors. I say this as someone as who has eaten my fair share of half-raw potatoes.

Breakfast Casserole - Our girls love when we make Garbage on our outdoor campout, so we've tried to convince them that this is the indoors version. They voted against it last time, but we'll try again.

Mini-Meatloaves - Think these are adorable - if you can get the girls past any preconceptions about meatloaf, I bet they'd love them.

Breakfast Pizza - Can you tell breakfast is my favorite meal of the day?

Really, with all the conveniences of home at your disposal, no recipes is off-limits. We tend to stick with those that our girls love and are cost-efficient, but I'd love to hear some of your troop's favorites!

Happy Sunday Surfing!
