Sunday Funday Links: Take a Hike!

Hiking Ideas
Fall has always been my favorite season, yet it always seems so fleeting (at least around here). We've had some beautiful fall weekends here the past couple of weeks, but I know it won't be long before it turns cold and dreary. Every year, I try to soak up as much of the fall weather as possible but it's never enough.

For me, most autumn weekends are spent cheering on my college football team. But it's also a great time to get outside with our Girl Scout troop. We'll be going camping in a few weeks, and I know hiking will be on the agenda. For our girls, some of their favorite hikes have been the ones with no agenda, where we just set out without a plan and see what we discover. That said, it can be fun to mix it up. Themed hikes or nature activities can help girls slow down, focus on the world around them and discover new things they might have overlooked.

Here are some ideas to add variety to your next hike, as well as some good hiking resources:

Give Me Five, Wildlife Observation and Microscope Hike

Scavenger Hunts

19 Can-Do Nature Walk Variations - ideas to incorporate into your next help (these would be helpful for me, as I have a tendency to walk too fast and sometimes miss out on these opportunities)

12 Nature Walk Crafts for Kids - fun ways to remember your outing

Take a Color Walk - neat idea for younger kids

Nature Hikes and Activities for Cub Scouts - would work just as well for your Girl Scouts

Local Hikes - you don't have to go out to the middle-of-nowhere to have a successful hike - find a nearby trail or hike in your area

Types of Hikes from Girl Scouts of Western Washington

Trail Reviews - another good site for finding trails in your area

The Great Girl Scout Hike - if you live near the Appalachian Trail, be sure to check out this opportunity to hike in celebration of the 100th anniversary

Night Hikes - our girls have just started to see the appeal of night hikes - here are some ideas from an outdoor learning center that could easily be adapted

American Hiking Society - resources and ideas

Happy Sunday surfing!
